Background of the Study
Family planning is a critical aspect of reproductive health that enables individuals and couples to make informed choices about when and how many children to have. It involves the use of contraceptive methods to prevent unintended pregnancies and promote healthier pregnancies. In Nigeria, access to family planning services is limited, particularly in rural areas, and there are numerous barriers to family planning uptake, including cultural beliefs, economic factors, and lack of awareness (Ogunleye & Adedayo, 2023). Nurses, as primary healthcare providers, play an essential role in educating individuals about family planning methods, providing counseling, and offering contraceptive services.
Edo State Specialist Hospital (ESSH) is a significant healthcare provider in southern Nigeria, where family planning services are provided to a large population. However, many challenges remain in improving awareness and increasing the uptake of family planning services in the region. Nurses at ESSH are in a unique position to promote family planning by educating patients and addressing myths and misconceptions about contraceptive methods. This study will examine the role of nurses in promoting family planning awareness and uptake at ESSH, assessing their knowledge, communication skills, and the barriers they face in providing effective family planning services.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the known benefits of family planning, its uptake remains low in many regions of Nigeria, including Edo State. Nurses are crucial in increasing awareness and encouraging the use of family planning methods, but there is limited research on their role in this regard at Edo State Specialist Hospital. Nurses may face challenges such as inadequate training, cultural resistance, or limited resources that hinder their ability to effectively promote family planning services. This study seeks to explore these challenges and provide recommendations for improving family planning awareness and uptake at ESSH.
